What can I expect during a dental checkup?

During your dental checkup, Dr. Chong performs a full mouth evaluation, carefully checking for cavities, gum disease, or other dental problems. If need be, the dental staff may take X-rays to see what’s happening beneath the surfaces of your mouth. X-rays may be recommended if your provider sees evidence of decay or suspects you might have impacted teeth.

Afterward, the dental staff performs a thorough teeth cleaning using special tools to scrape away plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth, as well as in between your teeth. The last step involves a member of the team brushing your teeth with a high-powered electric brush to remove any stains.

How often should I visit the dentist?

Dr. Chong and his dental team recommend you visit them at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings. This allows Dr. Chong to thoroughly examine your teeth and take X-rays because there’s always a possibility that you may have a dental problem that isn’t visible.  

Since cavities and gum disease are preventable, it’s important to catch them early while they’re still easily managed. 

What oral health signs indicate it’s time to visit the dentist? 

Specific signs you should take seriously include: 

Toothache

While a toothache can range from minor to excruciating, it’s important you visit Dr. Chong and his team immediately when you first feel your tooth start to hurt. The inside chamber of your tooth could become inflamed due to a cavity and lead to tooth loss. 

Irritated gums

Swollen, tender, and bleeding gums aren’t normal and are a sign of gum disease, which can lead to bone loss around your teeth. 

Bad breath

If you experience persistent bad breath even after brushing and flossing, there may be something else going on such as gum disease or the formation of a cavity.
